Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 14:24:19 GMT

It’s not often you see a pitcher emerge from the dugout and jog out to the bullpen in the middle of the second inning. But only moments later, Sean Manaea was making it a roundtrip commute, and Logan Webb was hanging his head on the bench. The Giants’ young ace was not even two weeks removed from twirling the top gem of his career, a complete-game shutout to lead the club into the All-Star break. But tasked Saturday with being the stopper of a losing streak, Webb’s night was over and San Francisco’s hopes were dashed one out into the second inning. The Giants (54-45) lost their second straight to the last-place Nationals, 10-1. The skid reached four games. They will turn to an opener, Scott Alexander, in Sunday’s series finale, a must-win to avoid being swept in a three-game series for the first time this season.Webb failed to complete five innings for the first time this season, allowing six runs that raised his ERA to 3.48 from 3.11.In a second inning t...

Mets’ banged-up outfield stretched thin at Fenway

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 14:24:19 GMT

BOSTON — The Mets’ position player depth is severely depleted in Boston this weekend, which is bad news considering how difficult it is to navigate the Fenway Park outfield. The dimensions of the 111-year-old field make sense only because it’s a 111-year-old field. The outfield doesn’t mimic the curve of the infield at America’s Most Beloved Ballpark. Instead, a crooked outfield mimics the jagged streets of Boston, measuring 320 feet in the left field corner, 379 in left-center on the other end of the Green Monster, 420 in the center field corner and 380 in right field before it curves off into the stands.“It’s the toughest right field going,” said manager Buck Showalter. There is a lot of ground to cover in right field and the Mets are without their starting right fielder, Starling Marte, who was placed on the 10-day injured list with migraines Thursday. They’re also without left fielder Tommy Pham, and the Monster isn’t exa...
