By Diane Jeantet | Associated PressRIO DE JANEIRO — A Brazilian congressional panel on Wednesday accused former President Jair Bolsonaro of instigating the country’s Jan. 8 riots and recommended that he be charged with attempting to stage a coup.An inquiry panel of senators and representatives mostly allied with the current leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva — who narrowly defeated Bolsonaro in last fall’s election — voted 20-11 to adopt the damning report drafted by Sen. Eliziane Gama. The move was largely symbolic because it amounts to a recommendation for police and prosecutors to investigate, and federal law enforcement officials separately have already been investigating Bolsonaro’s possible role in inciting the Jan. 8 uprising.Bolsonaro has denied involvement in the rioting, which took place more than a week after the right-wing leader had quietly left the country to stay in Florida while refusing to attend Lula’s inauguration.“It’s ...Single family residence sells in San Jose for $1.5 million

By Najib Jobain, Isabel Debre and Ravi Nessman | Associated PressKHAN YOUNIS, Gaza Strip — Israel said Wednesday that it will allow Egypt to deliver limited quantities of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. The first crack in a punishing 10-day siege on the territory came one day after a deadly blast at a Gaza City hospital killed hundreds and put immense strain on Gaza doctors treating the many wounded as medical supplies ran out.The announcement to allow water, food and other supplies happened as rage over Tuesday night’s blast at al-Ahli Hospital spread across the Middle East, and as U.S. President Joe Biden visited Israel in hopes of preventing a wider conflict in the region. There were conflicting claims of who was responsible for the explosion. Hamas officials in Gaza quickly blamed an Israeli airstrike, saying hundreds were killed. Israel denied it was involved and released a flurry of video, audio and other information that it said showed the blast was instead due to a ...‘I didn’t know if I would get up from the sidewalk that day’: Man sentenced to 14 years for sexually assaulting woman as she walked Oakland streets

(KRON) -- The president of a Silicon Valley-based medical technology company was sentenced on Wednesday to eight years in prison and ordered to pay $24 million in restitution for using a global pandemic to fuel a "massive fraud," according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.Mark Schena, 60, of Los Altos, used his company, Arrayit Corporation, to defraud investors and submit $77 million in claims for COVID-19 and allergy testing, prosecutors said. A federal jury convicted Schena on Sept. 6, 2022 in San Jose. "Schena engaged in a scheme to defraud Arrayit’s investors by claiming that he had invented a revolutionary technology to test for virtually any disease using a single drop of blood from a finger stick sample," federal prosecutors wrote. Schena's fraud scheme mirrors a similar fraud made by disgraced Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes. Holmes, who was convicted of fraud and is currently in federal prison, was a rising star in Silicon Valley when she claimed Theranos' blood testing tech...Bay Area students stage walkouts protesting Israel-Hamas war
