Ask Amy: Cousin debates disclosing brutal truth

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 14:10:22 GMT

Dear Amy: My younger cousin, “Thomas,” recently moved close enough to make visits between us possible.Thomas is married to a lovely woman. They’ve extended an invitation to me, my husband, and adult children, to come to their new place for dinner. This would be lovely, except that his father, who was married to my mother’s sister, sexually molested me and my sister when we were young.I have no desire to be anywhere near this creepy uncle.I never let him near my own children, unsupervised, when they were young, and they have no relationship with him.My mother and her sister are both long-deceased, and I have no idea if they knew what was going on when my sister or I would babysit for Thomas and sleep at the house overnight. My dad mentioned knowing about this before he died. I am sad that he didn’t confront his brother-in-law and protect his own daughters. How do I beg off visiting my cousin without opening up this can of worms? They have no children, so at least that’s not something I n...

“Did you ever play a musical instrument?” I asked Unlucky Louie in the club lounge.“I was a percussionist in my high school band,” he replied.“I’ve always wondered what somebody had to know to play the cymbals,” I mused.“Nothing,” Louie shrugged, “except when.”Louie was East in today’s deal from his penny game, and West led the deuce of spades against South’s four hearts (reached with a “transfer” auction). Louie knew the lead was a singleton; he took the K-A and led a third spade for West to ruff.GOOD SPADESThe defenders had their book, but South won West’s diamond shift, drew trumps, discarded his remaining diamonds on dummy’s good spades and claimed the rest. Making four.Louie mistimed. He knew enough to give West a spade ruff but didn’t know when. Louie should lead the nine of spades at Trick Two. West ruffs and leads a diamond: jack, king, ace.
