RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Republicans who control the North Carolina legislature with veto-proof majorities are close to wresting supervision of elections from the governor and the governor’s party — almost always the Democrats for over a century.A bill that could reach Gov. Roy Cooper’s desk this week would, among other changes, take away from him and future governors the power to appoint members of the State Board of Elections. It would give that authority to legislative leaders instead. The legislation also could lead to the ouster of the top elections administrator ahead of the next presidential election in a state where former President Donald Trump squeezed out a razor-thin win over Democrat Joe Biden in 2020. North Carolina was Trump’s narrowest victory that year, raising hopes among Democrats that Biden could win there in 2024.GOP attempts since 2016 to erode Cooper’s election board power have been struck down by courts or defeated by voters in a statewide referendum.Cooper ...

Several players gave voice to their frustration and disappointment after the game.Below is a sampling of player reaction from the locker room and post-game press conferences:QB Mac Jones“I think, obviously, it sucks. But, really, when you’re close, you just have to do more, I think. Weight room, film, practice. Like, everyone just has to do more.  And hopefully if you do that, I mean, you know you did everything you could do, right? So at that point, some of it’s out of your control. Some of it is luck, some of it’s other things. But for us, just got to do more.”WR JuJu Smith-Schuster“We’re all very, very upset and very down about it, but there’s a lot of things to learn and a lot of things to grow and to imp...

Patriots react to wild overturned play that sealed loss to Dolphins

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 15:55:23 GMT

FOXBORO — At first glance, it looked like the Patriots had made a spectacular, unexpected play to keep their comeback bid against the Dolphins alive.Facing fourth-and-3, trailing by seven with under a minute left in the fourth, the Pats desperately needed a first down. They reacted as such in their effort. Mac Jones found Mike Gesicki in the flat, but when stopped by a defender and noticing he was short of a first down, he made a head’s up play by lateraling the ball back to offensive lineman Cole Strange, who caught the ball in acrobatic fashion, and then barreled through multiple defenders in an attempt to get to the marker.Strange looked like he had pulled off the impossible. The call on the field was initially that he had converted the first down to keep the drive alive. Gillette Stadium roared. But after a video review, the play was overturned, ruled that Strange’s knee had hit the ground with the ball inches short of the first down marker at Miami’s 29-yard line. It sealed the...

He had enough yards to convert the third down before Dolphins edge defender Bradley Chubb chopped at his arm from behind, dislodging the football.
